Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
The importance of being physically active to health and well-being has been extensively researched and well documented- increasing fitness, reducing stress and improving sleep being just some of the effects. Health and Physical Education remains an integral part of schools’ curriculum, with the focus being on ‘students enhancing their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation’. Playing sports provides a great vehicle for children to partake in exercise, learn team building and social skills and have fun!
We are pleased to offer many opportunities at St Joseph’s for students to be physically active and involved in sporting endeavours. The recent Division Bowls and Regional Swimming events and the preparation that lead up to them are two examples. Next Tuesday we are holding our Senior School Athletics Day. In preparing for the athletics day, Michelle Richards, our Physical Education specialist, along with the support of classroom teachers, has promoted the health and social benefits of physical activity through athletic sports and taught the specific skills for each activity. We encourage students to take risks, have a go and be proud of their efforts.
As well as preparing students for the physical activities on the day, we have also been encouraging students to be ‘good winners’- show humility, encourage teammates and be happy for those who achieve great results. One of the aims of the Health and Physical Education curriculum is for students to ‘develop and use personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills and strategies to promote a sense of personal identity and wellbeing and to build and manage respectful relationships’.
For some students the Athletics day provides an opportunity to learn or practise dealing with disappointment. While it is very hard to see your child/children upset or disappointed it is crucial for their wellbeing that they learn to deal with challenging feelings and emotions and eventually bounce back in a positive manner. Maintaining anger, making irrelevant excuses or blaming others is not productive in helping children move on. It is important that students know that they can’t help what they feel (angry with themselves/upset/disappointed/jealous/envious). However they can help what they think.... (oh well- I tried my best, never mind- there will be other opportunities, well doesn’t....look happy- I’m happy for them!) What they choose to think can change how they feel.
Here’s where we can help! As well as talking with children about this and encouraging the use of strategies to help (take deep breaths, self-talk etc), modelling how to deal with setbacks and disappointments is very powerful. Simple things we do in front of children give us the opportunities. How do we react if we miss out on that parking space? Or when someone cuts in on us in the line at the checkouts? When something goes wrong do we automatically make excuses for ourselves and look for someone else to blame? We can all easily slip up in these areas. Our actions, of course, speak louder than our words. Showing children how to manage and rebound from challenges is one of the strongest lessons we can give.

Acting Principal
When I go to confession, it is in order to be healed, to heal my soul.
To leave with greater spiritual health. To pass from misery to mercy.
The centre of confession is not the sins we declare, but the divine love we receive, of which we are always in need.
The centre of confession is Jesus who waits for us, who listens to us and forgives us.
Remember this: In the heart of God, we come before our mistakes.
And let us pray that we may experience the sacrament of Reconciliation with renewed depth,
to taste the forgiveness and infinite mercy of God.
Amen
The grade 1/2 students have been learning about the concept of identity. We have been creating mind maps to represent different aspects of our lives, including family, friends, hobbies and interests. The children have enjoyed comparing their mind maps with each other, using venn diagrams, to see what things they have in common and what things make them unique. Students have also been considering how they have grown and changed since they were babies, and presented their ideas on a timeline.
1/2 Team
Senior school life has been a busy time developing our routines and good work habits.
In Maths we are focusing on Place Value, including decimals and understanding 24 hour time.
Our Writing time is being spent developing detailed narratives, and learning how to read punctuation with expression. We have read some of our work aloud on Seesaw for our parents to listen to.
This week we completed a narrative Cold Write on the topic “The Mysterious Egg”.
We have started reading Group rotations and one activity has been to write a letter to our teacher, describing the book we are reading. Kids News is another reading group rotation where we are informed about a topic of interest that may be in the news at the moment and answer questions related to the article.
Our Intergraded Studies topic this term is Ethics and Emotions. We are learning to respond to different situations, as well as the different Habits of Mind. We are identifying how they can be useful in our lives.
5/6 Team
The grade 6 students have been lucky enough to be invited to the local Lawn Bowls Club to participate in a competition against other schools. We have had a couple of practices with some local experts and on Friday March 12 we participated in the Division Competition, unfortunately we didn't make it through to the Regional Competition but we all had a great day!

Project Compassion 2021 - Be More
Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, love and generosity. You can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to 'be more' for our world. Each family has received a Project Compassion box, Project Compassion runs for the 40 day duration of Lent and we encourage families if possible to contribute to this cause. Boxes will also be available in your child’s classroom if you wish to make a donation via their classroom. We please ask that Project compassion Boxes be returned to school no later than Wednesday March 31.
Caritas Australia share stories about resilient souls trying to ‘be more’ for their families and communities. Read their inspiring tales, and see how your generosity makes a difference. Click the image below to find out more.

The Liturgical Press has just released a simple prayer resource for families during the Easter Season.
The Easter season comprises the most important weeks of the liturgical year, but observance of the season in parishes and homes often doesn’t reflect its significance. Easter Mealtime Prayers for the Family brings Easter from the altar table to the family table—an easy, effective step for family observance. This simple prayer resource provides the “domestic Church” with a means to cherish together the living faith we celebrate throughout the Easter season. Available in e-book form
